What is UEFI? UEFI and BIOS are two types of user interfaces for boot process management in a computer system. BIOS, which is also called Legacy boot mode, is old and has CUI (Character User Interface). Whereas UEFI boot mode is new and developed form. And it has GUI (Graphical User Interface).
All new computers these days come with UEFI support already. And it is replacing the old BIOS very fast. So let’s know what UEFI is.

What is uefi
It works similar to BIOS. It was first introduced with the Windows 7 and Vista operating systems. It was created to fix the flaws in BIOS. In a way, it is similar to the firmware operating system in a computer. Or in simple words, it is a software interface mediating between the computer firmware and the operating system.
UEFI works similar to BIOS to link a computer’s operating system and its firmware. In UEFI, the computer starts the operating system by checking the hardware components at the time of computer startup.
In this, all the information and settings from the beginning till its startup are stored in the form of .efi file in the ESP i.e. EFI system partition of the hard disk. It supports both 32 bit and 64 bit mode whereas if we talk about Lagacy bios then it works only on 16 bit mode.
It supports both modern and outdated computer systems and hardware. And compared to Legacy mode, UEFI has higher performance. UEFI boot mode can read both GPT mode and MBR files while Legacy boot mode can only read MBR files.

- In this, the operating system loads quickly.
- More than 4 partitions can be created in this for storage.
- It can read both GPT and MBR files. Whereas Legacy mode can only apply to MBR files.
Why was Legacy upgraded to UEFI?
If you might be wondering why BIOS legacy was upgraded to UEFI. Because there were many shortcomings in the Legacy boot mode, in view of these shortcomings it was upgraded as UEFI boot mode. But even today wherever old computer systems are used, mostly legacy mode is used.
